East Side skaters are about to get a dope new spot thanks to hometown rapper and skater MGK.
Luke Easter Park is getting a 10,000 square-foot skatepark, and MGK, real name Colson Baker, is dropping $250,000 of his own cash to make it happen.
The full project is $1.3 million, and the city is teaming up with the Skatepark Project and even chasing a $500,000 state grant.
Baker hit up the city earlier this year saying he wanted to do something for the Southeast Side, and after talking with locals and the Skatepark Project crew, they settled on Luke Easter as the perfect spot.
Right now Cleveland only has one big public skatepark downtown at Crooked River, so this is a huge W for the East Side. The new park is gonna sit by the restrooms and parking lot, next to Zelma George Rec Center, and it’s set to open August 2027.
City Council already signed off on MGK’s donation, and with the Skatepark Project chipping in $50,000 and the city throwing $500,000 in, it’s moving fast.
Alexandria Nichols, the Parks Director, said they hope people come through from all over and that it can even host events. Last August, Street League Skateboarding had a competition at North Coast Yard during “MGK Day weekend,” showing the city is already hyped for skating and music mixing together.
cleveland.com posted:
“The new skatepark would be built at Luke Easter Park, with a tentative opening date in August 2027. MGK, whose real name is Colson Baker, is donating $250,000 toward the $1.3 million project through his philanthropic foundation.
City spokesman Tyler Sinclair said Baker approached Cleveland earlier this year wanting to collaborate on a project on the Southeast Side. With help from the Skate Park Project, a foundation tied to skater Tony Hawk, they met with residents and decided on a new skate park at Luke Easter.
