This photo was taken in 1998 in Kampong Cham province. Before the ceremony began, the young boy named Srey Pov suddenly stopped talking, stared straight ahead, and clenched his fists so tightly they looked like coal. The family assumed he was just exerting all his strength, but when the photographer took the picture, Srey Pov turned toward the young man next to him and whispered, “Do you know where you are right now?”
That night, Srey Pov disappeared. When they searched for him, they found him hanged under a poot tree. The family kept the photo hidden away.
Until a week ago, a young man scanned the photo into his phone. When he opened it to look at it, the person in the photo had vanished—yesterday, the young boy had disappeared too.
Today, Srey Pov no longer tilts his head. She is looking straight at whoever is viewing this photo. If you are looking at the photo right now, Srey Pov has disappeared, but look behind you—she might be right behind you.
